Delicious homemade Krispy Kreme donuts with a warm, sweet glaze that elevates every occasion.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (1/4 oz) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp whole milk (for glaze)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, mix the yeast with warm milk and a teaspoon of sugar. Let it sit for about 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the foamy yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5–7 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
  4. First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 60 minutes or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the donuts: Punch the dough down and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thick. Use a donut cutter to cut out donut shapes, and place them on parchment paper.
  6. Second rise: Cover the shaped donuts with a cloth and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  7. Fry the donuts: Heat oil in a deep pot over medium heat. Once hot, carefully add the donuts, frying them for 2–3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  8. Make the glaze: While the donuts cool slightly, mix the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth.
  9. Glaze the donuts: Dip the warm donuts into the glaze, allowing any excess to drip off. Place them on a wire rack to set.

Notes

Ensure the milk is warm (not hot) when activating the yeast for the best rise. Glaze the donuts while they are still warm for the best absorption and flavor.
